Numeracy-Focused e-Learning

Introduction to Math e-Learning Modules

The Science of Teaching math e-Learning modules cover the teaching and learning of three key concepts in early numeracy: (i) Numbers and Quantities, (ii) Addition and Subtraction, and (iii) Place Value.

The modules are designed such that teachers can explore what young children learn about these key concepts, the materials that can be used for teaching, the practice activities that can be used with children to enhance learning, and reflect on how to use the materials and activities in their own classrooms. Completing the modules will strengthen teachers understanding of the key concepts and how to teach these effectively to children in early years of primary school.

It is advisable to work through the mini modules systematically to strengthen deep understanding. However, teachers can target specific mini modules if they wish. The mini modules are designed such that they are complete independently. Teachers are encouraged to take time to reflect on the activities, answer the questions posed in the mini modules, and discuss with other teachers. A certificate is generated upon completion of each module. All modules are anticipated to be available for use in September 2024.

Upcoming: Introduction to Module 1: Numbers and Quantities

The goal of this module is to for teachers to identify and describe how children develop basic number skills, identify materials and strategies for teaching number and quantities, and develop new teaching practices for number and quantities.

This module has an introduction and four mini modules: Mini Module 1A – Count, Mini Module 1B – Compose, decompose and subitise, Mini Module 1C – understand, read and write numbers, and Mini Module 1D – compare numbers.

Upcoming: Introduction to Module 2: Addition and Subtraction

The goal of this module is to for teachers to identify and describe how children develop understanding of addition and subtraction, identify various materials and strategies for teaching addition and subtraction, and develop new teaching practices for number and quantities.

This module has an introduction and three mini modules: Mini Module 2A – Understand Addition, Mini Module 2B – Understand Subtraction. and Mini Module 2C – Apply Addition and Subtraction.

Upcoming: Introduction to Module 3: Place Value

The goal of this module is to for teachers to identify and describe how children develop understanding of place value, identify materials and strategies for teaching place value, and develop new teaching practices for place value.

This module has an introduction and three mini modules: Mini Module 3A – Group ones and tens, Mini Module 3B – Understand the digits of numbers. Mini Module 3C – compare two- and three-digit numbers.
