The Science of Teaching math modules cover the teaching and learning of six key concepts in early numeracy:
(i) Numbers and Quantities,
(ii) Simple Addition and Subtraction,
(iii) Place Value,
(iv) Double-digit Addition and Subtraction,
(v) Foundations of Geometry, and
(vi) Simple Fractions.
Each module has a downloadable PDF version, and e-learning version:
Downloadable PDF modules are designed to be simple and flexible so that they can be used by different people (e.g. program implementers, teacher trainers and teachers), and in different circumstances (e.g. pre-service, in-service teacher training, ongoing professional development program). They provide content but are not prescriptive in how they should be implemented.
See the Implementation Guide for more information on using the downloadable modules.
E-learning modules are designed so that they can be completed independently. Teachers are encouraged to take time to reflect on the activities, answer the questions posed in the mini modules, and discuss with other teachers.

The goal of this module is for teachers to identify and describe how children develop basic number skills, identify materials and strategies for teaching number and quantities, and develop new teaching practices for number and quantities.
This module has an introduction and four mini modules: Mini Module 1A β Count, Mini Module 1B β Compose, decompose and subitise, Mini Module 1C β understand, read and write numbers, and Mini Module 1D β compare numbers.
The goal of this module is for teachers to identify and describe how children develop understanding of addition and subtraction, identify various materials and strategies for teaching addition and subtraction, and develop new teaching practices for number and quantities.
This module has an introduction and three mini modules: Mini Module 2A β Understand Addition, Mini Module 2B β Understand Subtraction, and Mini Module 2C β Apply Addition and Subtraction.
The goal of this module is for teachers to identify and describe how children develop understanding of place value, identify materials and strategies for teaching place value, and develop new teaching practices for place value.
This module has an introduction and three mini modules: Mini Module 3A β Group ones and tens, Mini Module 3B β Understand the digits of numbers, Mini Module 3C β compare two- and three-digit numbers.
The goal of this module is for teachers to identify and describe how children develop understanding of addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers, identify materials and strategies for teaching addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers, and develop new teaching practices for addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers.
